Frozen Water and Sewer Pipe Repair
Every year about 250,000 people experience one if not more rooms in their
house flooding due to freezing and bursting pipes. If you notice that your pipes
are freezing it is important to take care of it immediately and carefully before
it bursts.
Common Problems:
The biggest problem occurs when frozen pipes bursts due to the
pressure inside of the pipe. When a pipe bursts it can spill several hundred gallons of water per hour, which can cost you a lot of extra money and cause a lot of damage to your home.
A good way of knowing if your pipes are frozen is by turning on the faucet. If no water comes out, they are frozen. Common Locations for Pipes Freezing are pipes that are in an outside or exterior wall, Under a sink on an outside wall, or in an unheated crawl space
Ways to Help Prevent Pipes from Freezing:
- If you own a home that is not occupied, it is recommed that you have your home winterizied before it gets cold for the winter.
- Seal any leaks in your home no matter what the size, especially if the leak is near pipes. after sealing a leak use insulation or calk, this will help to keep the heat in and the cold air out
- Disconnect garden hoses from the house and then use an indoor water valve to drain the pipes and to keep the water turned off.
- Insulate pipes that are located in areas where they are more susceptible to the cold.
- Use electrical heating cables or heat tape around the pipes especially when the temperature is below freezing.
- Make sure to follow the directions for the heating cables and the heat tape and only use them for their intended use.
Facts:
- When trying to thaw a frozen pipe don’t use a flame or torch; instead try using a hair dryer, a space heater, or an electric pipe wrap, or call your preferred plumber.
- While in the process of trying to thaw a pipe and there is water leaking that is a good sign that the pipe has burst due to the water freezing and causing pressure inside of the pipe. If this has occurred then the water valve needs to be shut off in order to prevent water damage.
